How a small garden can better this world so much.
Produce travels an average 1300-2000 miles from farm to consumer. It takes one gallon of fossil fuel per hundred pounds of produce to ship by semi. 80% of the energy used in U.S. food system goes to processing, packaging, transporting, storing, and preparing food. This energy can be saved by growing and eating locally.
In 2002, 35,000 acres (140 km²) of urban gardens produced 3.4 million tons of food. In Havana, 90% of the city's fresh produce comes from local urban farms and gardens.
Food security http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_security refers to the availability of food and one's access to it. A household is considered food secure when its occupants do not live in hunger or fear of starvation. Worldwide around 852 million people are chronically hungry due to extreme poverty, while up to 2 billion people lack food security intermittently due to varying degrees of poverty.
A poster campaign "Plant more in 44," encourages the planting of "Victory Gardens" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victory_garden by nearly 20 million Americans during WW2. They produced almost 40% of all fruits and vegetables being consumed nationally.
Composting - Waste water and organic waste can be reused many times. It can be recycled back into the environment naturally, without the use of much energy.
Over 1 million children (39% of homeless) sleep on the street or in shelters. Teach these kids gardening and they have a way to make money and eat at the same time. There is a lot of science in agriculture! An estimated 100 million people worldwide are homeless. Almost 50% of a person in poverty is spent on food! Average American spends $300 a month on food.
200,000 (16%) people in Phoenix live below poverty line.
50% of the world's population lives in cities. 800 million people are involved in urban agriculture world-wide and contribute to feeding urban residents. By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are expected to have a population of 10 million or more. To feed a city of this size - at least 6000 tonnes of food must be imported each day.
Gardening and farming chores can be easily combined with household chores and childcare.
Benefits: Better health and nutrition, increased income, employment, food security within the household, and community social life. I am making the bold claim that Urban Agriculture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_Agriculture) can solve our energy needs. There is no doubt in my mind.
I started a "Gifting" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gifting) experiment Febuary 1, 2009.
Its my hope to see that our future sustainable (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable) life is built around a
"Gifting Economy." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gift_economy)
For one year every dollar I make will be gifted away. (Febuary 1, 2009 to Febuary 1, 2010) Even if I make 1 million dollars. All my trades and services are gifted too! I have been documenting everything I have given away and received so far. Miracles are happening everyday! The last 10 weeks have been amazing, and its only just begun!
The State of the World
It seems everyone is unsatisfied with the state of the world. The rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer. But we all suffer, rich and poor! Things are only going to get worse. So what should people do? For me the most important thing to do is plant a garden. Next is voluntary simplicity. We are going to need to bond together and help each other out locally through community building: POTLUCKS! The dollar is about to be hyper-inflated, so learn about bartering and a gifting economy. Lastly, really listen to your heart and make the changes in your life that little voice is telling you to do. Get healthy, holy, happy, and make new friends. Educating yourself to the following wikis should help too.
